PROFILE OF THE GA WEST MUNICIPAL HEALTH DIRECTORATE

The Ga West Municipal Health Directorate (GWMHD) is responsible for coordinating, managing, and overseeing the delivery of health services within the Ga West Municipality. The Directorate is headed by Dr. Yaa Dankwah Akuamoah-Boateng, a Public Health Specialist, who provides strategic leadership for the delivery of quality, accessible, and equitable healthcare services to the people of the Municipality.

The Municipal Health Directorate is administratively organised into four sub-districts: Amasaman, Kotoku, Mayera, and Oduman. Healthcare delivery within the Municipality is structured in accordance with the three-tier Primary Health Care system of the Ghana Health Service, comprising the community, sub-district, and district levels.

At the community level, the Municipality has approximately 412 communities, served through 32 functional Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) Zones and five CHPS Compounds. These community-level services provide an important foundation for primary healthcare delivery, with emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention, maternal and child health, community mobilisation, and other essential health services.

At the sub-district level, healthcare services are provided through Five health centres, which serve as an important link between community-based services and higher levels of care. At the district level, healthcare delivery is supported by a District Hospital and a Polyclinic, which provide a broader range of curative and specialised services.

Healthcare delivery in the Municipality is further complemented by 14 private health facilities, which contribute significantly to expanding access to healthcare services for residents.

The Municipal Health Directorate primarily provides preventive, promotive, public health, administrative, planning, monitoring, and supervisory services, while the CHPS Compounds, Health Centres, Polyclinic, and District Hospital provide the major components of curative and clinical care. Through collaboration across these levels and with public and private-sector partners, the Directorate works to strengthen the local health system and improve the health and wellbeing of the population of Ga West Municipality.
