The Ga West Municipal Assembly on February 3, held a community sensitisation at Medie as part of its preparations for the ongoing reassessment of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Programme.
The engagement, organised by the Social Welfare and Community Development Office of the Assembly, was aimed at informing residents about an upcoming community validation exercise, a key stage in determining the continued eligibility of beneficiaries under the government-led social intervention program.
LEAP, which was launched in 2008, provides financial support to some of the country’s most vulnerable citizens, including extremely poor households and orphans. As part of efforts to ensure the programme reaches those most in need, a nationwide reassessment was conducted last year to evaluate the living conditions of beneficiaries.
During the reassessment, officials visited the homes of beneficiaries at Medie and other communities across the country to assess whether their livelihood had improved since they were enrolled on the programme.
The results of the reassessment are now being finalised for community validation, a process that allows community members to confirm the accuracy of the findings. The outcome of the validation exercise will determine which beneficiaries remain on the programme, after which a new registration will be conducted to identify other eligible individuals.
Presenting at two Community Information Centres, Madam Evelyn Nanbigne, Head of the Social Welfare and Community Development (SWCD) of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, emphasised that the LEAP programme is strictly non-political. She encouraged residents to participate openly and honestly in the validation exercise.
Madam Nanbigne further noted that beneficiaries whose living conditions have improved should willingly allow others who are more vulnerable to benefit from the programme.
The community validation exercise is scheduled to commence by Monday, 9th February 2026, and residents have been urged to actively take part. Community members seeking further information or clarification have also been advised to visit the offices of the Ga West Municipal Assembly.
