The Ga West Municipal Assembly has re-elected Honourable Emmanuel Mawuli Amuzu as its Presiding Member following a Special Assembly Meeting held on Wednesday, 25th February at the Assembly Hall.
The meeting was convened in line with Sections 17 (1) and (3) of the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), which mandates every Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assembly to elect a Presiding Member to steer its affairs upon the expiration of tenure.
Welcoming members to the sitting, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mrs Louisa Benon, described the election as a constitutional requirement essential to the smooth functioning of the Assembly. She underscored the importance of consensus, transparency, and responsible leadership in strengthening local governance.
The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. John Desmond Sowah, in his opening remarks, stated that the election was aimed at ensuring leadership continuity and effective administration within the Assembly. He urged members to set aside individual interests and focus on unity and development.
During deliberations, concerns were raised about the need for a re-election while the incumbent was still in office. Addressing the issue, Honourable Love Alister, Assembly Member for Amasaman, explained that the process was necessary to maintain stability and continuity. He stressed that the Assembly’s strength lies in unity rather than numbers and called for collective efforts toward building a stronger Ga West.
Proceedings were later handed over to the Electoral Officer, who opened nominations and supervised the voting process through a secret ballot. 26 votes were cast, all of which were valid. The ballots were sorted and counted in full view of members to ensure transparency.
At the end of the exercise, Honourable Emmanuel Mawuli Amuzu emerged as the duly elected Presiding Member and was sworn into office by the District Court Magistrate Judge, His Lordship Stanislaus Amanoipo.
Honourable Amuzu, in his acceptance speech, expressed gratitude to Assembly Members for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to lead with integrity, unity, and dedication in the interest of the Municipality.
Hon. Paul Mintah, Presiding Member of the Ga East Municipal Assembly, witnessed the occasion.
The Municipal Chief Executive, in his closing remarks, emphasized unity and resilience, noting that the peaceful and successful conduct of the election demonstrated the Assembly’s shared commitment to development. He congratulated the newly elected Presiding Member and encouraged all members to continue working together to deliver meaningful development to the people of Ga West.
The meeting was officially dissolved after the swearing-in ceremony, marking the commencement of a renewed tenure dedicated to enhancing governance and driving development within the Municipality.
