The Government of Ghana's Nkoko Nketenkete project is set to distribute three million birds across 276 constituencies as part of efforts to boost local poultry production and reduce reliance on imported chicken. The project, which is part of the broader Feed Ghana Programme, aims to increase Ghana's poultry self-sufficiency from 12% to 75% by 2028, saving the country over $350 million annually spent on imports.
The Ga West Municipal Assembly officially launched the Nkoko Nketenkete project on February 17 making it one of the first constituencies to benefit from the initiative. The project focuses on providing employment opportunities, enhancing food security, and supporting farmers with necessary inputs and technical guidance.
Beneficiaries of the project will receive 50 broiler chicks, feed, and technical support from the government. The broiler chicks, being a feeble breed, require careful attention so beneficiaries are advised to provide proper housing with good ventilation, effective feeding management, and comprehensive health management through vaccinations and biosecurity measures.
Honourable Sedem Kweku Afenyo, MP for Amasaman constituency, emphasized the need for beneficiaries to be vigilant in caring for the chicks, stating, "If you don’t see the need to take care of these chicks, then it is better you let someone who is willing to handle them do that." He announced plans to conduct house-to-house checks to monitor the conditions and care provided to the chicks.
Dr. Arhin, an agricultural officer of the Ga West Municipal Assembly, highlighted the importance of proper care and management of the chicks, advising beneficiaries to monitor their behaviour, feeding patterns, and health, and to seek veterinary support when needed. He also emphasized the need for beneficiaries to provide spacious cages or consider partnering with others to acquire a tricycle for safe transportation of the chicks.
The project officially commences on February 18, 2026, with every farmer and beneficiary whose name is on the list entitled to receive 50 chicks and one feed from the government. This initiative is expected to have a positive impact on Ghana's economy and food security, and beneficiaries are urged to take advantage of the support provided by the government to ensure the success of the project.
