President John Mahama has urged the contractor working on the Ofankor–Nsawam road project to complete the work by the June 2026 deadline, stressing that government will strictly hold the company accountable.
The President gave the directive on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 when he inspected ongoing works on the major arterial road, which links Accra to Kumasi, the country’s two largest cities. He described the project as critical, citing the heavy traffic flow along the corridor and the hardship delays had caused commuters.
He also raised concerns about project financing, questioning why initial funds had been exhausted, forcing government to provide an additional GH¢78 million.
“A loan was taken for this project, and I don’t understand why the money is finished and the project is not over,” he said. “We are now having to pay an additional GH¢78 million from government funds. We need to find out what really happened, whether the estimates were wrong or something else went wrong.”
Although he acknowledged that traffic movement had improved in recent weeks, the President urged the contractor to enhance site management to minimise disruption to motorists.
“We will hold you to your word. You say by the end of the second quarter next year, you should be finished,” he stressed.
President Mahama further disclosed that the project has been placed under the government’s Big Push programme, which has GH¢14 billion allocated for this year and an additional GH¢30 billion projected for next year. He assured that the government would provide sufficient resources to keep the work on track.
“As the government commits to pay you well, you too must commit to move faster on the road and also use quality materials,” he said. “Your company is one of the well-known road construction companies in Ghana, and so we hope this project will reflect the quality of your brand.”
