The Ga West Municipal Assembly on Friday, July 10, 2026, joined the nationwide National Flood Aftermath Clean-up Exercise with a massive sanitation campaign across the Amasaman township aimed at promoting environmental cleanliness and preventing the outbreak of diseases.

The exercise, which formed part of the Government’s directive for Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to undertake a nationwide clean-up in flood-affected areas, brought together Assembly staff, Environmental Health Officers, Zoomlion workers, traders, residents and other stakeholders to improve sanitation within the Municipality.

The clean-up focused on the Amasaman Lorry Park, Central Market and other identified areas that required urgent attention. Participants desilted choked gutters, cleared overgrown weeds and collected refuse to ensure the free flow of water and create a cleaner environment.

Addressing participants, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Ga West, Hon. John Desmond Nii Sowah, said the exercise was in line with government’s commitment to improving sanitation and building healthier communities.

He stressed that sanitation would remain one of the Assembly’s key priorities in 2026, noting that development could only be achieved in a clean and healthy environment.

“We cannot develop as a Municipality if we don’t take sanitation seriously. This is a reminder that keeping Ga West clean is everyone’s responsibility,” he stated.

The MCE also used the opportunity to urge residents to remove all structures obstructing the ongoing road construction project within the Municipality. He cautioned that structures not removed voluntarily could be demolished to pave the way for the successful completion of the road works.

Also participating in the exercise was the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Aspirant for the Amasaman Constituency, Hon. Akwasi Owusu Afrifa Mensah, who called for unity among political leaders in pursuing development initiatives.

According to him, national development should transcend political differences.

“Even though I’m not the MP for Amasaman, that should not stop me from taking part. I’m a Ghanaian and must be involved. What we need now is togetherness and teamwork to build a better Ghana,” he said.

The Member of Parliament for the Amasaman Constituency, Hon. Sedem Afenyo, also underscored the importance of maintaining clean surroundings, encouraging residents to make sanitation a shared responsibility.

“This cleaning is very important. If we want to see a better Ghana, we must all come together to keep our surroundings clean,” he remarked.

Officials from the Assembly’s Environmental Health Unit took advantage of the exercise to educate residents on proper waste management practices. They encouraged households and business owners to acquire waste bins and subscribe to approved waste collection services to ensure proper disposal of refuse.

Some residents commended the Assembly and the leaders for actively participating in the exercise, describing their involvement as a demonstration of commitment to improving sanitation in the Municipality. They also appealed for the provision of more refuse bins and the organisation of regular community clean-up exercises.

The National Flood Aftermath Clean-up Exercise was organised by the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs as part of measures to restore cleanliness in flood-affected communities. It also aligns with the National Cleaning Day initiative, which promotes voluntary clean-up exercises and environmental sanitation across the country.
