GA WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY OBSERVES THE NATIONAL TREE PLANTING PROJECT WITH A CALL TO ACTION

The Ga West Municipal Assembly on Thursday, joined the rest of the nation in commemorating the Tree for Life (T4L) Restoration Initiative, to confirm their commitment to environmental sustainability and the national reforestation agenda.

The program which was held at forecourt of the Assembly brought together key stakeholders and was graced by the Member of Parliament for Amasaman constituency, Hon. Sedem Afenyo, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. John Desmond Sowah Nai, the Presiding Member, Hon. Emmanuel M.K. Amuzu who served as Chairman for the occasion, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Mr. Isaac Kwakye, Assembly Members, delegations from the Forestry Commission, Heads of Departments, staff of the Assembly and the schools around the Assembly.

The MCE called on all present to play active roles in the tree-planting campaign. He stressed on the importance of forming monitoring teams and adopting effective post-planting care practices to ensure the growth of the seedlings planted. He further stated that the government plans to plant 10 million trees across the country. He reiterated that the initiative launched by the President of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama on 21st March 2025 is a significant step in combating climate change, reducing deforestation, and restoring Ghana’s degraded forest cover.

In the Presiding Member’s remarks, Hon. Emmanuel Amuzu urged all present to play active roles in this national exercise. He emphasized on the long-term benefits of a greener Ghana and stressed that the communities should get involved to ensure a sustainable environment.

The Member of Parliament for Amasaman constituency, Hon. Sedem Afenyo highlighted the theme for this year’s exercise as ‘Tree for life and Restoration.’ He emphasized the importance of not just planting trees but ensuring their survival through regular monitoring and community involvement.

A representative from the Forestry Commission also addressed the gathering and pledged the Commission’s readiness to support all stakeholders to have access to the seedlings. He encouraged NGOs and local groups to liaise with the Forestry Commission for tree supply.

The project concluded with the symbolic planting of trees at the Assembly and its neighbourhood by the dignitaries and participants. Tree seedlings were also distributed to the various departments and communities for planting across the municipality.
