Right To Information (RTI) Act Campaign Held for Some People of Ga West Municipality

06.Oct.2025

The Information Services Department (ISD) Ga West on 29th and 30th September organized a public education session on the Right to Information (RTI) Act for some people within the Ga West Municipality at the NIA and NHIS offices of the Assembly respectfully. The engagement formed part of efforts to deepen citizens’ understanding of the Right to Information Act, 2019 (Act 989), and to encourage active participation in local governance.

Addressing the gathering, Miss Naomi Amoadzah, RTI Officer explained that the RTI Act is a law that grants every Ghanaian the right to access information held by public institutions, subject to certain exemptions. She emphasized that the law is not only intended for journalists or researchers, but also for every citizen who seeks clarity or holds duty-bearers accountable.

The session highlighted the importance of the RTI Act in promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. She said, by empowering citizens with access to information, the Act helps in reducing corruption, improving service delivery, and ensuring that government officials remain answerable to the people they serve.

Miss Amoadzah guided community members on how to apply for information under the Act. She explained that a citizen may submit a written or verbal request for information to the relevant public institution. The request must clearly describe the type of information being sought for. She further explained that applicants are to provide their contact details and, where necessary, pay a small fee for the reproduction of the information.

She informed them that institutions are mandated to respond within 14 days of receiving a request, with the possibility of an extension in certain circumstances. Importantly, she emphasized that no one should be denied information except in cases where disclosure may affect national security, personal privacy, or other legally protected interests.

In conclusion, she encouraged the public to make use of the law in a responsible manner, noting that access to information is a powerful tool for development. She called on community members to spread the knowledge gained, so that more citizens can exercise their right to information and actively contribute to the growth of the Ga West Municipality and the nation as a whole.
