The Ga West Municipal Assembly (GWMA) has successfully held its 3rd Ordinary Meeting of the 3rd Session of the 9th General Assembly at the Assembly Hall in Amasaman on Thursday and Friday, 18th and 19th December 2025. The meeting brought together Assembly Members, Heads of Departments, traditional authorities, and other key stakeholders to deliberate on governance, development, and accountability issues within the Municipality.
The two-day meeting, presided over by the Presiding Member, Hon. Emmanuel M. K. Amuzu, was formally convened to review the Assembly’s progress, consider committee reports, and discuss policy and development matters affecting the Municipality.
Delivering his Sessional Address in accordance with the Local Governance Act, 2016 (Act 936), the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. John Desmond Sowah Nai, presented a comprehensive account of the Assembly’s activities during his first year in office. Drawing inspiration from 1 Corinthians 12:21–26, the MCE emphasized teamwork, unity, and shared responsibility as essential ingredients for development.
He reported that the Assembly had focused on strengthening law enforcement, improving staff welfare, and accelerating development through visible projects across the Municipality. In the area of sanitation and development control, the Assembly recruited additional personnel for both the Sanitation Taskforce and the Development Control Taskforce to enhance monitoring and enforcement of regulations.
On staff welfare, the MCE announced the approval of a 25 per cent salary increment for all Internally Generated Fund (IGF) staff, describing it as a deliberate move to boost morale and productivity.
Significant progress was also recorded in infrastructure and social interventions. In the education sector, classroom blocks at Mpehuasem, Manhean, Adjen Kotoku, Kutunse, and Kpobikpoe were at various stages of completion or contract execution. In health, contracts were signed for CHPS Compounds at Manchie–Korleyman and Pobiman, while re-roofing works at the Municipal Health Directorate and NADMO offices were nearing completion.
The Assembly also signed contracts for the drilling and mechanisation of 15 boreholes and the maintenance of 30 existing ones. Additionally, 80 new streetlights were installed and 300 rehabilitated, all of which were fully completed. Road infrastructure works, including feeder roads, urban roads, drainage projects, and dredging of the Manchie Stream, were highlighted as key interventions aimed at improving accessibility and reducing flooding.
As part of efforts to strengthen accountability and address public concerns, the Assembly considered a report on petitions received by the Public Relations and Complaints Committee (PRCC) for the year 2025. The report detailed several petitions presented before the Committee, along with decisions and actions taken.
Among the issues reviewed by the PRCC was an allegation made by Hon. Elorm Amegah, the Assembly member for the Sarpeiman concerning the demolition of an unauthorized structure at the Sarpeiman electoral area against the Chief Executive and Mr. Eric Donkor, the former Municipal Engeneer. The PRCC directed Hon. Amegah to retract the earlier claims and apologise to the Municipal Chief Executive at a General Assembly meeting which he did. The Municipal Works Engineer was further instructed to demolish the structure in question, with clarification that the structure was a wall and not a building, and that no funds were involved as alleged. Technocrats were also directed to act on instructions from the Municipal Chief Executive. The status of this demolition remains pending.
The Executive Committee also presented 28 recommendations for consideration and ratification by the General Assembly. These covered areas include taskforce orientation, stakeholder consultations, road updates, installation of streetlights in schools, establishment of an assessment centre for persons with disabilities, improved revenue mobilisation, support for security agencies and youth institutions, as well as the resolution of boundary disputes.
In his closing remarks, the MCE expressed appreciation to Assembly Members for their cooperation and constructive engagement. He proposed that the Assembly meet every two months to address pressing issues more promptly. He also extended Christmas and New Year goodwill messages to Assembly Members, staff, and Heads of Departments, urging them to renew their commitment to service delivery in the coming year.
The meeting ended with a renewed resolve to deepen accountability, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate inclusive development across the Ga West Municipality.
