2024 Green Ghana Day Marked: Ga West Municipal Assembly Plant Trees

The Ga West Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Target Environmental Health and Youth Network (TEHAYON), a non-governmental organization in Ghana has observed the 4th Edition of the National Celebration of the 2024 Green Ghana Day. The theme for the 2024 Green Ghana Day celebration is “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow”.

The Green Ghana Day celebration held on 7th June is aimed at restoring degraded landscape and instilling the values of tree planting in the youth.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Clement Wilkinson in His key note address urged everyone to participate in planting trees as it is a collective responsibility to make the country greener.  He further stated that the government has commenced an aggressive afforestation Program which has led to the cultivation of 720,000 hectors of land between 2017 and 2023 under the Ghana Forest Plantation strategy.

Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, a Principal Agriculture Officer at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture read the speech on behalf of Dr. Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Food and Agriculture. Mr. Agyemang stated that the policy direction of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is in line with climate change and sustainable agricultural development. He further asserted that the Ministry is working at increasing agricultural productivity. He admitted that the Agriculture sector is among the sectors which are vulnerable to climate change despite being a key contributor to climate change through its sustainable agriculture practices. He said a key solution to climate change is to plant trees so the Green Ghana Program is so dear to the Ministry and the Country as a whole. Bringing His statement to an end, He said the Ministry encourages all farmers to grow trees especially fruit trees to improve their livelihood.

In attendance to the program were Hon. Clement Wilkinson, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Isaac Kwakye, the Municipal Coordinating Director, Hon. Daniel Asumadu, Presiding Member, Nii Korle, a member of the Ga Traditional Council and the Chair Person for the event, Mr. Kingsley Agyemang, a Principal Agriculture Officer from the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Yahya Kassim Atta , the NPP Parliamentary Candidate and other stake holders in the Ga West Municipal Assembly.

Dignitaries and all participants planted trees at the Amasaman Cluster of Schools.

The celebration of Green Ghana Day at the Ga West Municipal Assembly was a resounding one. It highlighted the importance of community involvement in the environmental conservation and laid the groundwork for continued efforts to make Ga West a greener and a more sustainable municipality. The event did not only contribute to the immediate goal of planting trees but also fostered a long term commitment to environmental stewardship among participants.
