GA WEST MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY CONCLUDES WEEKLONG NATIONAL SANITATION EXERCISE

22.Dec.2025

The Ga West Municipal Assembly, through its Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit, successfully carried out a weeklong National Sanitation Exercise from Saturday, 13th December to Saturday, 20th December 2025, across selected communities in the municipality.

The exercise formed part of national efforts to promote environmental cleanliness, public health, and community responsibility. It brought together municipal staff, partner institutions, community groups, and residents to improve sanitation conditions in major commercial and residential areas.

Activities commenced on Saturday, 13th December 2025, at Achiaman and its environs, where officers undertook extensive public sensitization. Letters were distributed to churches, mosques, selected restaurants, information centres, day and night markets, the central business district, and lorry parks. This was followed by sweeping, weeding, refuse collection, and the issuance of statutory notices to ensure compliance with sanitation regulations.

On Monday, 15th December 2025, attention shifted to the Amasaman street market and lorry station, where sweeping, weeding, refuse collection, and enforcement activities were carried out to improve hygiene in the busy commercial hub.

The exercise continued on Tuesday, 16th December 2025, at Stadium Junction and its environs, with similar sanitation activities aimed at clearing waste, improving drainage, and encouraging adherence to environmental health standards.

On Wednesday, 17th December 2025, sanitation teams worked at the Kotoku Railway Station and surrounding communities, focusing on sweeping, weeding, refuse collection, and the issuance of notices to defaulting individuals and businesses.

The Obeyeyie Station and its environs were covered on Thursday, 18th December 2025, where additional desilting of drains was undertaken alongside sweeping, weeding, and refuse collection to reduce the risk of flooding and disease outbreaks.

On Friday, 19th December 2025, the exercise moved to Kpobikope and its environs, where sanitation officers and community members again collaborated to clear waste, weed overgrown areas, and enforce sanitation by-laws.

The weeklong exercise concluded on Saturday, 20th December 2025, at Manhean 44, the information centre, and surrounding areas, with sweeping, weeding, desilting of drains, and final enforcement activities.

Throughout the exercise, logistics deployed included compaction trucks, skip trucks, tricycles, brooms, cutlasses, rakes, wheelbarrows, as well as personal protective equipment such as Wellington boots, gloves, and nose masks.

Key collaborating institutions included the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Information Services Department, keep fit clubs, residents’ associations, and religious and traditional leaders.

The Municipal Assembly commended all stakeholders and residents for their active participation and cooperation, noting that the exercise significantly improved environmental cleanliness across the municipality. Residents were urged to sustain the gains made by maintaining good sanitation practices and always complying with environmental health regulations.
